Troy High Science Olympiad Summer Workshops

We hope to see you from August 10th-16th, 10am-3pm on Zoom!

The Troy Youth Education Foundation has partnered with Troy High's Science Olympiad team to create the Troy High Science Olympiad Summer Workshops. First organized two years ago, this new annual event has experienced both in-person and virtual settings.

Every year our volunteer instructors create high-quality, thorough presentations and notes for every Science Olympiad event. During in-person workshops, we offer 44 classes in elementary, middle, and high school level sciences and valuable hands-on experience. Students are able to handle real human bones and help model proteins out of pipe cleaners. This year, our workshops were completely online, featuring 24 unique events for K-12 students. Every class is one hour, and includes five minutes purely for student questions.

Registration for the 2020 Troy High Science Olympiad Summer Workshops has ended, but we are excited to see you next year!

Summer Workshops: Welcome

Why should I sign up?

Summer vacation is supposed to be fun - a designated time to unwind from studying and school - so why should you attend a week-long STEM-focused workshop?

Just ask "summer slump", the idea that students may forget what they worked so hard to learn during the school year. By reviewing scientific concepts spanning multiple grades, answering practice questions, and using their critical thinking skills, students can be prepared for the rigor of school, and even get ahead of their peers.

24 Unique Virtual Events (44 In-Seat)

Science Olympiad covers many different fields of science (23, to be exact) and we felt that our workshops had to reflect this diversity. From Anatomy and Physiology to Machines to Water Quality, there is a class for everyone and their passions.

900 Slides of Interactive Presentations

Every class will have its own original presentation with 2-3 instructors with experience in the event as speakers. Students are encouraged to ask questions any time through a regularly monitored chat and a 5-minute period dedicated to answering questions or reviewing slides.

We also have two Q & A sessions for parents and students to ask our officers anything about Science Olympiad or high school.

200+ Pages of Comprehensive Study Materials

All topics covered in the presentations and more are included in each class's note packet, which is emailed to each student. Inside these documents, you'll find definitions, diagrams, and thorough explanations. Each practice problem in the note packet even comes with a step-by-step explanation! These note packets are designed to be a study resource for anyone trying out for their local Science Olympiad team or preparing for competitions.

Support THSSCIO

The Troy High Science Olympiad team is determined to do its best, and that includes seeking out the best resources - anything from college textbooks to balsa wood. Buses, team uniforms, hotel rooms, and invitational fees also create a significant dent in our club budget. This workshop provides a significant portion of our funds, and for that we are so grateful to all of our registrants for making these opportunities possible!

Summer Workshops: What We Do

Participant Feedback

Because these workshops are so new, we are still experimenting with new technology, presentation styles, and methods of communication with parents. Every year, our workshops greatly improve, largely because we actively seek out feedback and constructive criticism and work hard to implement changes. We would like to thank all the parents and students who took the time to help us improve our mutual workshop experience!

Summer Workshops: What We Do

"I learned a lot from this class and I’m glad I’ve been able to attend!"

"The teachers all did a wonderful job of teaching and working through technical difficulties as they came up. I also think that they were very respectful towards people who were being disruptive and didn’t just snap at them."
